Preventive Care
- Heart attack and stroke risk screening: comprehensive cardiovascular exam
- Whole-body MRI screening to detect early-stage and unsuspected disease
- Breast cancer screening: MRI scans of the breast and surrounding tissue
- Colorectal cancer screening: MRI scan of the colon and abdominopelvic region
This checkup program takes place over the course of 2 days.
Day 1
1. Heart attack and stroke risk screening
- Comprehensive preliminary consultation, including medical history
- Analysis of personal risk profile
- Recording and analysis of diseases and (nonspecific) symptoms
- Physical examination
- Ultrasound scan:
- Heart
- Carotid arteries
- Abdominal aorta
- Electrocardiography (ECG) and cardiac stress test + pulse oximetry
- Pulmonary function test
- Blood flow testing: peripheral arterial blood flow, venous pressure
- Complete blood count, including risk parameters for cardiovascular disease
- Urinalysis
- Comprehensive post-examination consultation
- Provision of a written report summarizing the examination results and including a recommendation for any further course of action
2. Whole-body MRI screening
- Comprehensive preliminary consultation, including medical history
- Analysis of personal risk profile
- Recording and analysis of diseases and (nonspecific) symptoms
- Examination includes:
- Head and carotid arteries
- Neck and chest
- Abdominal and pelvic organs: liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, urinary bladder, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes
- Lymph nodes
- Entire spine
- Joints and soft-tissue structures: exploratory examination of the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles
- For technical reasons, the scope of the examination does not include the heart, the breasts and the colon.
- Comprehensive post-examination consultation
- Written report summarizing the examination results and including a recommendation for further action
Preparing for Day 1
- Please appear at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
- If your appointment is in the morning, please refrain from eating breakfast.
- If your appointment is in the afternoon, please fast for at least 5 hours before your appointment.
- Drinking non-carbonated water, coffee and tea (without milk or sugar) is permitted.
- You may take your medication as accustomed.
Day 1 Duration
- Your stay will last for around 4 hours.
- Snacks and beverages will be served.
Day 2
3. Breast cancer screening: MRI scan of the breast and surrounding tissue
- Comprehensive preliminary consultation, including family history
- Analysis of personal risk profile
- Recording and analysis of any diseases and (nonspecific) symptoms
- MRI scan of the breast and surrounding tissue. During the examination, the breasts are positioned in a breast coil that accommodates all breast sizes. This eliminates the need for any uncomfortable pressing or manipulation of the breasts.
- Comprehensive post-examination consultation
- Written report summarizing the examination results and including a recommendation for further action
4. Colorectal cancer screening: MRI scan of the colon and abdominopelvic region
While this examination does not involve the use of an endoscope, a small water enema is administered to dilate the folds of the colon.
- Comprehensive preliminary consultation, including medical history
- Analysis of personal risk profile
- Recording and analysis of any diseases and (nonspecific) symptoms
- Examination includes:
- Scanning the outside of the colon to detect diverticula
- Scanning the inside of the colon to detect polyps, tumors or other signs of disease
- Scan of the entire abdominopelvic region
- Comprehensive post-examination consultation
- Written report summarizing the examination results and including a recommendation for further action
Preparing for Day 2
- Please appear at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
- You may take your medication as accustomed.
- Breast MRI:
- If your menstrual cycle is regular, the scan is best performed between days 7 and 14, a phase of your cycle during which the glandular breast tissue can be especially well represented.
- If your menstrual cycle is irregular, please confer with us in advance about when your appointment should take place.
- If you are postmenopausal, the examination can be carried out at any time.
- If you take any hormone medication (e.g. an oral contraceptive), the examination cannot be carried out until you have stopped taking the hormone for at least 4 weeks.
- MRI scan of the colon:
- You will need to take a laxative on the day before your appointment in order to empty your colon. Specific information pertaining to the type or brand of laxative to be taken and how it is to be administered will be made available to you once your appointment has been arranged.
- Please notify our medical staff well in advance of your appointment if you suffer from diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease.
Day 2 Duration
- Your stay will last for around 3 hours.
- Snacks and beverages will be served.
A Matter of Safety
- MRI scans make use of a strong magnetic field. For this reason, please bear in mind the following restrictions:
- Patients with a cardiac pacemaker, a defibrillator, an artificial heart valve made of metal and/or an insulin pump are not allowed to undergo the MRI scan.
- Patients who have undergone surgery for the placement of a medical device that is at least partly made of metal (including cochlear implants, artificial joints, intramedullary nails, vascular clips, cardiac stents, metal clips and metal plates, but not including dental inlays) must wait at least 6 weeks before undergoing the MRI scan.
- Please notify our medical staff in advance if you suffer from impaired kidney function.
- Please bring any related medical reports with you to your appointment.
